Demand Pockets

Women we need to stand together. We outnumber the men.  If even only half of us stand behind each other and for each other, we can invoke major outcomes.  We can change what we want for the better.  We can make this world better for us and our daughters.

We don’t need to go march on Washington or form picket lines.  We can do simple little things.  The things that make day-to-day life better.  One of the easiest is shopping for clothes.  We do this often.  Sometimes even several times a week.  Yet most clothes are designed by men.  They design them based on how they want women to look.  Not actually what we want to wear.

Have you seen a runway show lately?  NO way a real woman would ever wear those outfits in real life.  NO way a real woman would ever fit into those clothes.  What the hell are they thinking? Spiked high heels, low cut, boobs out, too tight to walk in dresses.  What are we statues to be looked at?

We can make clothing designers design clothes for the 99% of us that will never walk on the runway.  Clothes that fit properly and have pockets.  Clothes that are functional comfortable and make us feel good.  Clothes that we can work the manufacturing line in.  Clothes are designed to stay in place on the production floor.  Clothes that meet OSHA standards and not in the men’s only department.

All we have to do is simply refused to buy clothes that don't fit our criteria.

Magazines covers be damned.  We are the ones with the buying power.  We are the ones that vote for what we will put up with and what we will not put up with every day.  WE VOTE with our pocketbooks.  We vote on what is acceptable to us and what is not.

There are millions of us.  There is no reason we have to dress to impress anybody.  We can dress the way we want to dress because that's what makes us feel good.  Our clothes need to be functional for the lives we live.  Why do I have to shop in the men’s department to get clothes I can wear to work?  How come men’s clothes always have pockets, and are designed for comfort and function?  How come they are cheaper when men buy less?

We need pockets dammit.

We need clothes that fit real women.  Real women have curves.  Real women are more than just one number.   We are not Barbie doll runway toothpicks.  We do not have people waiting on us and carrying our stuff.  We are badass, get it done, let's do this, people. We deserve clothes that help us get our jobs done not hinder us so men can gawk.

The next time you buy a piece of clothing, pause a second.  Ask, am I buying this to impress someone?  Am I buying this because this is the way I am supposed to dress based on other people’s standards?  Is this item functional, will it make my life easier?  Does it have pockets?

It's time we stuck together because when we do that, we can accomplish anything.
